Once a year we have an opportunity to marvel the architectural beauty inside as well as outside the stately homes surrounding Delaware Park. To realize this event, gracious Parkside homeowners will open their doors for guests on Sunday May 21nd from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm as part of the Parkside Community Association’s 7th annual Tour of Homes. Several beautiful homes will be open to tour. Homeowners supported by knowledgeable docents will assist you in exploring these unique Buffalo residences.
The tour starts at the Church of the Good Shepherd, on the corner of Jewett Parkway and Summit Avenue. Information, tickets, and maps will be available at the start of the tour. The Darwin D. Martin House complex, the premier example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie style architecture, will be open for abbreviated tours for Home Tour ticket holders, along with the Wisteria Museum Shop at the nearby Barton House. The Church of the Good Shepherd will also provide brief tours of its historic building with its treasured Louis Comfort Tiffany window.
Tickets will be available at a discount in advance, and for PCA members. Tickets can be obtained by visiting the PCA office, 2318 Main St. in Buffalo or by calling 838-1240 during regular business hours. Proceeds benefit the continuing non-profit work of the PCA.
No children under the age of twelve please. Event is held rain or shine.
The Parkside Community Association is Buffalo’s oldest and largest active neighborhood association. The Parkside neighborhood includes superb examples of architectural styles such as Victorian, Queen Anne, American Four Square and Craftsman Arts & Crafts bungalows. The Parkside 1880 to 1930 building period includes designs by prominent local architects E.B. Green and William Sydney Wicks.
Parkside was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted "The Father of American Landscape Architecture", and his partner Calvert Vaux, to demonstrate the novel possibilities of rural meadows like Delaware Park, originally called just "The Park", being integrated into a pre-planned neighborhood in an American industrial city. Parkside is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Parkside Community Association is sponsoring its 9th Annual Garden Tour on Sunday, June 25th, from 10 AM to 4 PM. The self guided tour is the perfect time to show off the gardens, tree lined streets, and beautiful outdoor living spaces of the historic neighborhood. Residents proudly fling open their gates to share the little treasures found in nooks and crannies and behind fences. It’s a great opportunity to see outdoor city living at its best.
The Garden Tour starts in the heart of Parkside, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, on the corner of Jewett Parkway and Summit Avenue, right across from Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin Martin House complex. Information and maps will be available the day of the tour. Over 50 gardens will be displayed, from modest rock gardens to meticulous front-to-back landscaping. A $5 donation to the PCA is encouraged and appreciated.
Parkside is a Frederick Law Olmsted designed neighborhood and is adjacent to the Buffalo Zoo and Delaware Park. The well maintained turn-of-the-century Victorian and Arts and Crafts homes provide a picturesque accent while enjoying the Garden Tour. Parkside is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
